Why Do Dark Marks Last Longer On Deeper Skin Tones?
Written by: The Curcia Team

If you have melanin-rich skin, you have probably noticed that a spot can heal in a few days but leave a dark mark that stays for weeks. You're not imagining it.
What's happening
Melanin is the pigment that gives your skin its colour. When skin is irritated, by a spot, a scratch, an ingrown hair or a shaving rash, it can make extra melanin in that area as part of its response. Skin with more melanin tends to respond more strongly, so the mark left behind can be darker and more noticeable.
These marks are often called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. They are not scars. They usually fade over time, but on deeper skin tones that can take a while.
What can make them stay longer
- Sun. UV keeps pigment active, so marks can look darker and last longer without SPF.
- Picking. Every time a spot is squeezed or picked, the skin gets irritated again.
- Harsh products. Scrubbing hard or using products that sting can cause more irritation.
What helps
- Daily SPF.
- Gentle, consistent cleansing.
- Ingredients like kojic acid, which can help fade the look of dark marks with daily use.
- Patience. Give your routine a few weeks before you judge it.
If a mark changes shape, grows, bleeds or doesn't fade, see a doctor or dermatologist.
